Kinds of Fencing

Fencing is available in many different types of materials with benefits and disadvantages applying to each. Following are four of the major types of fencing.

 

-         Wood Fencing. This is the type that many people think of when they think about fences. Wood fences are usually made from strong wood with good designs. They look nice and stay in good condition with proper upkeep. They are also cheaper than vinyl and ornamental metal fences. The disadvantages of wood fences are their required maintenance. Wood fences attract insects and show weather damage. It is also recommended that they have stain, paint, or waterproof sealer used on them when they are installed and every three or four years thereafter. With the right upkeep, wood fencing will last a long time.

 

-         Vinyl Fencing. This is the type of fence that many recognize as the “white picket fence” motif. Although vinyl fencing may cost more than other types, it will last longer and maintain its quality appearance. It is available in many different varieties and has little to no required upkeep. It won’t discolor, flake, fade, or peal.

 

-         Chain Link Fencing. This type of fence is the least expensive; however, it is also known for its strength and durability. It is the easiest type of fence to install and one of the easiest types to locate and purchase. They are available in several different sizes and with different size chain links. However, it is often thought of as a “quick fix” for a fence since it doesn’t have the aesthetic appeal of other fencing and won’t maintain its quality and appearance in the long run.

 

-         Bamboo Fencing. This is probably the most lasting type of fence. Bamboo fences require very little upkeep, but are durable, very strong and great for the environment (since wood fences require trees to be cut down, which take years to replace, while bamboo grows back quickly). Many people also like the way bamboo looks when it weathers, a kind of silvery gray. Unfortunately, bamboo fencing is a new concept and thus is harder to find, which means that it usually has to be specially ordered.
