Planting to keep pests away and to encourage pollination is a time-honored practice for many gardeners. An example is to plant herbs like lavender, lemon balm, marjoram, hyssop, basil, coriander, thyme, borage and mint to encourage bees. Butterflies like lavender hyssop, bergamot, bishop’s flower, butterfly flower, chocolate flower, cleome, dill, fennel, gaillardia, Mexican sunflower, phlox and zinnias.
If you find that birds are destroying the fruiting trees in the garden, consider planting a mulberry bush. There will still be some damage to the larger fruits, but the birds will be so busy eating the mulberries that they may not have time to peck at the larger fruits.
Many gardeners have problems with deer if they live in an area where the deer have access to their gardens. One of the ways to prevent deer using the garden as their personal salad bar is to use plants that deer don’t like. There are a variety of helpful resources on the web that advise what to plant to deter these pests. It should be noted that no plant is deer-proof, but many come close.
