» Choosing a Silverware Set
Whether you are registering for silverware as a wedding gift or you want to remodel your kitchen, shopping for silverware can become a long process because of all the choices on the market. For the most part, however, silverware comes in three styles: traditional, ornate, and contemporary.
Traditional silverware matches well with plain, simple dishes and has an understated elegance that will not draw attention. On the other hand, ornate silverware is distinctive because it has intricate designs, particularly at the base of the handle, and an antique feel. Finally, contemporary silverware falls somewhere between the subtlety of traditional utensils and the intricacy of ornate silverware. Contemporary utensils often have a distinctive shape or curve and/or lines or ridges rather than an elegant design.
The style you pick will likely reflect your decorative tastes and will match the dishes you plan to use with the silverware. In addition, you should decide what hostess items you will want. Several serving utensils are rarely used in most kitchens, so determine which utensils you will actually use.
In addition to choosing a style that you appreciate, make sure you will be comfortable eating with the silverware. After all, silverware should be both functional and decorative. Hold each utensil in your hand, and determine whether it is too heavy, too light, too deep, too long, or just right.
