Before or after you decide out of which material your kitchen sink should be crafted, you still have to decide what style kitchen sink you want to purchase. Fortunately, the difference between sink styles is primarily a matter of taste and not durability.

Self-Rimming Sinks: Self-rimming kitchen sinks are a familiar and easy to install style. To install these sinks, simply cut a hole in the counter and drop the sink through the hole; the rim of the sink hangs an inch or more over the countertop and holds up the sink.
Undermount Sinks: Undermount kitchen sinks are more difficult to install than are self-rimming sinks and the countertop must be made of solid material such as granite or concrete, but they are attractive and convenient to clean. Since the sink rests at the same level as the counter, all you have to do is wipe items off the counter and into the sink; the rim does not interfere.
Apron Sinks: Apron kitchen sinks offer another popular design because the front of the sink appears to hang over the counter and thus actually forms the front of the counter.

In addition to these three styles, you can purchase gourmet sinks that come in various other shapes and styles and offer a number of non-standard features. Self-rimming and undermount sinks are the most popular models, however, and both can be made from several different materials. In addition to these categories, however, you have to also choose the number of basins for your sink.

Single Bowl: A single-bowl sink has one large basin and thus works best if you usually use the sink by yourself and can focus on one job at a time.
Double Bowl: Double-bowl kitchen sinks are popular because you can do two jobs at the sink or have two people working at the same time. Wash dishes over one basin, for example, while you soak items or wash vegetables in the other basin.
Triple Bowl: A triple-bowl sink is identical to a double bowl sink except that it has a small center basin for the garbage disposal.

Double-bowl kitchen sinks are perhaps the most popular kitchen sink, but all three types appear frequently in the kitchens of America. In addition, some homeowners have more than one sink in their kitchen, usually a smaller single-bowl sink and a larger double or triple-bowl model.
