Placement of cabinets is crucial in ensuring the cook has plenty of room to move around in the kitchen. In an effort to economize the three main functions of the kitchen, cabinets, refrigerator and the stove are often arranged accordingly in a triangle. This kitchen arrangement has been around for over 50 years. Through the years, other cabinet arrangements have become popular depending on the size and shape of your kitchen.

Single/Double File Kitchen: The cabinets in a single file kitchen are arranged along one wall. If the kitchen area is restricted such as in a small house or apartment, this single file arrangement is an optimal plan for the space that is provided. The double file kitchen has two rows of cabinets along each wall. This is the classical work kitchen with workspaces divided between the two walls. Again, this kitchen works wonders in a smaller space, confined space.

U Shaped Kitchen: This kitchen arrangement has cabinets along three walls. The sink is often at the base of the U. Cabinets in this shape are very basic and this kitchen arrangement can be found in many homes in America.

The Block Kitchen: If your kitchen is in this shape, you probably have a more modern kitchen in a newer home. This is also called an open kitchen. Open kitchens are more family friendly. In this kitchen, the stove or sink is located on a cabinet that is not bordered by a wall. This arrangement enables the cook to see and visit with other family members. Often, the missing wall is open to the family room or a breakfast nook where other family members are present doing homework or watching TV.
