Heating Fondue

The heat source or fondue fuel burner you use to warm and cook your fondue is determined by what style of fondue you will be making. Different styles of fondue require different levels of fuel. The basic fondue fuel sources are:

Butane: Butane is universal when it comes to fondue. You can use it when making chocolate, cheese, oil or broth. It is best when used with oil or broth fondues. Butane is extremely safe to use and is also odorless. It also allows you to easily regulate the heat it produces. Some butane units have a burn time of 9 hours

Alcohol: Alcohol is best when used with oil or broth fondues. It is generally safe to use but may not be as easy to regulate as butane.

Gel Fuel: Best with cheese or chocolate fondues. Gel fuel is very common with fondue sets and very user friendly. Gel fuel comes in gel paste, canned sterno and gel sterno.

Tea Lights: These are small votive candles and are generally only good to use with chocolate fondue. The low level of heat put off by the candle is perfect so that the chocolate does not get scorched but is not strong enough to heat any other types of fondue.
