Kentucky is a state of rivers, with the Ohio River forming its northern border and the Mississippi River its western border. It also is home to the Kentucky River, the Tennessee River, the Licking River, the Green River, and the Cumberland River. Its location in the midst of Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio causes Kentucky to be regionally diverse, actually part of the Midwest and the Southeast.

When considering Kentucky in regards to history, demographics of the people, economics, and really most other things, it must be divided into five basic geographical regions. They are the Cumberland Region (Mountains and Plateau), the Bluegrass Region (north-central), the Pennyroyal Plateau (south-central and western), the Coal-fields (western), and the Jackson Purchase (far west).
