Japan’s government is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary government. The capital of Japan is Tokyo.

Japan has 47 administrative divisions – called prefectures – they are Aichi, Akita, Aomori, Chiba, Ehime, Fukui, Fukuoka, Fukushima, Gifu, Gunma, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, Hyogo, Ibaraki, Ishikawa, Iwate, Kagawa, Kagoshima, Kanagawa, Kochi, Kumamoto, Kyoto, Mie, Miyagi, Miyazaki, Nagano, Nagasaki, Nara, Niigata, Oita, Okayama, Okinawa, Osaka, Saga, Saitama, Shiga, Shimane, Shizuoka, Tochigi, Tokushima, Tokyo, Tottori, Toyama, Wakayama, Yamagata, Yamaguchi and Yamanashi

Their legal system is modeled after the European civil law system and also includes an English-American influence. The system includes judicial review of legislative acts in the Supreme Court and it accepts compulsory ICJ jurisdiction with reservations.

Emperor AKIHITO has been the head of state since Jan. 7, 1989. Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi – who has been in office since April 26, 2001 – appoints the cabinet.
