The Eastern Asia country of Japan consists of a chain of islands between the North Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. It includes the Bonin Islands, Daito-shoto, Minami-jima, Okino-tori-shima, Ryukyu Islands and the Volcano Islands.

Slightly smaller than California, Japan consists of 377,835 sq. km. of total area – 374,744 sq. km. of land and 3,091 sq. km. of water. The highest point in Japan is Mt. Fuji, at 3,776 meters. Japan’s lowest point is Hachiro-gata at negative four meters. Japan’s climate varies from tropical in the south to cooler temperatures in the north.
