It is widely known that the Romans were masters of designs that benefited them during this era and some of the original roads and buildings still stand today. They put pride into their work and this resulted in excellent facilities all round for locals.
The Romans made a great deal of money by trading throughout Europe and this gave them the chance to build some of the most outstanding roads that lasted for centuries and some of these can still be seen today. The designing skills of the locals were excellent despite only using basic tools and know-how.
The main tool for this great design was called a Groma. Two pieces of wood were attached to one another with lead weights added to each end then if both pieces of wood lined up, a surveyor would know the work would be straight and without flaws.
Top Fact: The main reason these roads were produced was to open up the ability to pass urgent messages through without delay and this also meant easy transportation from A to B without causing damage to a chariot. These well maintained roads were linked to almost all major cities of importance, from London to York; Exeter to York and many other places throughout the United Kingdom but it has been planned this way for easy passage to all major routes.
