Unlike today, bathing was not a simple chore during the roman era and whilst many locals wanted to keep clean on a daily basis, sometimes it was not always possible due to the extent of work required and therefore, they did something to rectify the problem.
It was impossible for poorer people to afford such a luxury because they would have been taxed for the size of the pipes and this out priced an essential daily element for the majority of Romans.
The first roman baths were constructed and as it was based all under one roof, great savings were made. It consisted of one larger bath that could house about a dozen people at a time and for a small fee they would have access to use the public bath and some may have even included a pool and gymnasium. For a basic era, the Romans took great steps to ensure that everyone had the same basic benefits no matter what his/her standing was amongst the community.
