After two days in congested Rome, you might be ready to escape the city. Pompeii is 15 miles south of Naples, and it is a fascinating collection of ruins. The town was buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., and it was lost for 16 centuries until it was accidentally rediscovered. Today, it is one of Italy's leading tourist attractions. The villas at Pompeii paint an amazing picture of first century Roman life. Some of the most intriguing ruins include the House of Vettii, the Villa dei Misteri, and the Forum.

When you are finished touring Pompeii, take some time to visit the Amalfi Coast. The cliffs full of colorful buildings create a stunning backdrop for the water itself. Head back to stay the night either in Naples or all the way back in Rome.
