Italians have deep roots in the Catholic Church, and most Italians would classify themselves as Catholics, whether or not they attend regular services. There is no escaping the influence of the papacy, especially in Rome. It is a defining part of the nation’s history and development. Apart from organized religion, most Italians consider themselves very spiritual in nature, and prayer and conversations about spiritual concepts are normal and common. Religious holidays are celebrated in earnest in Italy, with the accompanying feasts and celebrations.
