Italians have an appreciation for art and music that surpasses most everywhere else in the world. A massive number of the greatest art masterpieces were created in Italy, and residents are proud of their ancestors’ cultural contributions. Many of the most famous and prolific artists were Italians. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Donatello are just a handful of the artists that called Italy home. It was Italian artists that shaped and defined the Renaissance, the most prolific flowering of artwork in history.

Opera is a creation of the Italians, and many residents know and hum opera scores from memory. A night out at the opera is a common occurrence, for both the wealthy city dweller and the simple villager. Famous composers Rossini, Verdi, and Puccini all hail from Italy.

Milan is one of the fashion capitols of the worlds, rivaling Paris and New York for influence and prestige. Some of fashion’s most famous names are Italian: Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, Armani, Valentino, Versace, and Gucci, just to name a few.

Italians live by the concept of una bella figuara, which translates a good appearance. It is important to Italians to present themselves with pride and care. They believe in putting your best face forward at all times and making a good impression on others. The concept is reflected in the cars they drive, the clothes they wear, and way they conduct themselves. Una bella figuara isn’t exclusive to the rich, however. It is more about maintaining self-respect and dignity and presenting yourself with class, whether or not you are clothed in the latest designer fashions.
