An Italian person’s family is treasured. Most Italians have an extended network of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, most of whom they see on a regular basis. It is not unusual for members of an extended family to gather on a regular basis, even weekly, to enjoy meals together. The family is the main social network for most Italians, meaning the lines between relatives and friends are often blurred.
In terms of friendships outside the family unit, Italians typically prefer a small number of close friends to a larger set of casual relationships or acquaintances. Time with friends is valued highly, and close friends usually make it a top priority to spend time with one another. Friendships in Italy are often quite honest, as Italians are usually not shy about sharing their opinions. You can expect a real friend to tell you the truth, no matter what.
Italians are also not shy about romance. Public displays of affection are the norm in most parts of Italy, though cities are usually freer than small villages, a pattern universal the world over. Passion is expected in relationships and considered paramount. The
divorce rate in Italy is much lower than in the United States. There are several reasons why, but one of them is the commitment to the enduring possibilities of love.
