Grab your walking shoes, and get started at Florence’s architecture heart and soul: the Duomo. The Duomo (Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore) is Florence’s defining piece of architecture. At the time of its completion in 1436, the cathedral was the largest in Europe. You can climb Brunelleschi’s ribbed dome for a breathtaking view of the city. Next door to the Duomo is Giotto’s Bell Tower (Campanile), which can also be scaled for a magnificent view.
While you are on the square, visit the Baptistery (Battistero San Giovanni), which is believed to be Florence’s oldest building. The basilica is octagonal in shape and most famous for its bronze doors designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti.
After a hearty Tuscan lunch, spend the afternoon exploring the Galleria dell’Accademia. The facility boasts many important paintings and sculptures, all of which are ultimately overshadowed by Michelangelo’s sculpting tour de force, the David. The 17-foot tall masterpiece was sculpted between 1501 and 1504 from a piece of leftover marble discarded by another artist. Make sure you call ahead before your trip to reserve tickets. Doing so will enable you to avoid inevitable long lines.
Enjoy a pleasant dinner and rest up for a full day of art viewing tomorrow.
