Contact the hotel or bed-and-breakfast directly
If you call the hotel directly you can inquire about special rates or discounts that might not be published. Facilities who cater to American tourists usually have an English-speaking operator to assist you.
Book online
Many hotel websites offer discounts if you book online. This most often applies to chains and larger hotels.
Stay outside the historical district
Location, location, location applies when it comes to hotel accommodations in a tourist-heavy city like Florence. The farther out you are willing to stay, the more money you can save. It is usually not difficult to catch a taxi into town to see the sights, and you might enjoy the quiet surroundings you can find away from the crowds.
Travel in the off-season
Busy season in Europe is generally considered to be mid-May through mid-September, with the heaviest crowds from mid-June to August. Shoulder season is usually considered to be Easter until mid-May and mid-September to mid-October. Any other time (with the exception of the two weeks surrounding Christmas) is considered off-season, and hotel rates can be much more affordable. Italian winters are usually somewhat mild, offering a great opportunity to travel to Florence on a budget.
