Viewing all the beauty in Florence is bound to whet your appetite, and the city does not disappoint when it comes to dining. The word florentine in American cooking usually indicates addition of spinach (i.e. quiche florentine, chicken florentine), but true Florentine dining is much more diverse.

For examples of true Florentine dining, try Il Latini near Piazza Santa Trinita. Meals are typically served family style, offering traditional favorites such as ribollita, pappa al pomodoro and penne strascicat. Another favorite is Buca dell’Orafo near the Ponte Vecchio. A short walk from the Medici Chapels is Trattoria Antellsei, located on the ground floor of a 15th century historic monument. They serve classic Tuscan recipes.

Sostanza has been serving characteristic Florentine food since 1869 and Sabatini serves traditional fare to an international crowd. Antico Noe is marked by the use of fresh, seasonal ingredients, chosen by the chef every morning.

For fine dining, consider Cibreo, where the chef offers Tuscan classics done with a creative flourish. It is very popular with tourists, so you might want to go elsewhere if you want to dine with the locals. Enoteca Pinchiorri greets you with immaculate linens and crystal glassware. Their focus is on employing classic French techniques while using fresh, local, Tuscan ingredients. Their wine pairings are unmatched.
