After the arrival of the Paleo – Indians during 9,500 B.C. many resided here and today there is no sign that the mass community once resided in the Iowa vicinity. It was all about to change because in 1788 Julien Dubuque became the first white settler to reach Iowa during this time. Dubuque and a few others were hired for mining work that was required in the local area and this changed history drastically. Two decades later the United States obtained Iowa in the Louisiana purchase and along with the purchase of New Orleans, Thomas Jefferson wished for easy navigation through the Mississippi river as Iowa was major in transporting goods via ship to its destination.
