When computers were first made, people were unsure as to how to use them. Suddenly the PC boom started and before many people had one and used it extensively. Then came the Internet. People got introduced to a new area of communications that would jump them into cyberspace at the speed faster than they could imagine. No longer were people talking to their next door neighbor. Now they were able to communicate with someone from perhaps Ireland, or Scotland, or even Japan. Eventually, people started sharing files over the Internet. Before long schools started teaching about computers and the Internet and how to use them. All this technology is fine and good until some unscrupulous mind decided to take advantage of it for his own evil deeds and as such caused widespread caution and concern. Before you decide to get on the Internet, there are some things you should know first:

·        Internet Security: As you may know, the Internet is a haven for many fun things and is chocked full of information. However, this comes with a price. For this also makes you vulnerable to prying electronic eyes, whose only goal is to monitor your every move so as to steal your identity or to provide you with an untimely and unwelcome virus. This is why the Internet needs to be secure for your safety.
·        Safe Browsers: If you are not familiar with the Internet, you can view web pages by means of a browser. This is a special software program that can view web pages and graphic images. If you already know this, you also know that the newer browsers are made with security features built-in to make cruising the Internet safer.
·        Operating System Security: If you have Windows XP, you already have security built-in the software. This way when you log into your system, you know you can do your work in safety.
·        Viruses: Having access to the Internet also can expose you to viruses, Trojan horses, and worms. These are tiny programs of code that when run can replicate themselves and cause untold harm and damage to your computer system.
·        Spyware and Adware: Ever go to a web site and see a window pop-up suddenly; perhaps clouding your view of the web page you are looking for? This may be a window that will introduce a program to you that will automatically download a software program to your computer. This downloaded software then installs and runs in the background. Its purpose? To monitor your every move so the company can anticipate your needs. All for marketing purposes. This is known as spyware or adware.
