Because skating makes your feet sweat, it is crucial to let your skates air-dry after you use them. Bacteria can build up in your boots and this is what causes the unpleasant smell. Air-drying can help reduce the build-up of such bacteria. Inline skate liners and usually your protective gear can be washed in the washing machine. Just be sure to use a mesh bag or tie them in a pillow case when you wash them. They cannot, however, be dried in the dryer. Air-drying is best.
