Is VoIP right for my business?

If your small business could benefit from some of the features of a PBX, but you can’t afford a PBX system, then you should seriously consider a hosted VoIP solution. Coupled with the free or cheaper long distance calls, it’s possible that you’ll save money while offering your employees and clients options unavailable to them within your existing phone system. However, that assessment changes if your business is seriously considering the installation of a VoIP phone system rather than a hosted solution. If you believe that your business would benefit from a switch to a VoIP system, consider the following:

• Monthly long distance charges: VoIP is undeniably helpful to a company whose employees routinely run up huge long distance bills due to travel or the distance between offices. However, the installation of VoIP equipment is also expensive, so examine your phone bill closely to determine exactly how much money you might save through VoIP.

• Network availability and capability: It’s likely that you already use a data network within your business, which should ease the transition to a VoIP system for you business. However, if that’s not the case, are you willing to spend the money for the installation of an internet network? Alternatively, if you do possess a data network, are you willing to pay if it’s necessary to upgrade that network for VoIP compatibility?

• IT requirements: Your VoIP system will require occasional upgrades and more frequent maintenance than a traditional phone system. In exchange for VoIP’s potential benefits, are you comfortable with the added expense of additional IT employees, or at least with the prospect of independent IT contractors regularly maintaining your VoIP system?
