» How Should I Compose Myself During a Video Conference?
Although videoconferencing provides you with many of the same features an in person meeting would, there are several etiquette tips that you should be aware of. The following are some things to consider when you are in the middle of a videoconference:
- Since the person on the other end of the conference cannot see the entire room, it is considered courteous to announce when someone is entering or leaving the room. This way, they will know whom all they are speaking to.
- Do not interrupt. This is true for teleconferencing as well, but since there is so much being fed through the cameras, constantly interrupting could make the meeting confusing. If you want to argue a point that someone is making, simply send the nonverbal cues necessary to convey that you wish to speak. Otherwise, wait until the other person is finished and then share your thoughts.
- Remember to smile. Do not forget that they can see everything that you are doing. Be sure and be aware of how you are communicating nonverbally to the person on the other end of the conference. This includes you facial expressions, your dress, your gestures, your posture, and your eye contact.
- Avoid fidgeting. If you move around too much, you might slip off screen without realizing it. Also, fidgeting is a sign of nervousness and you want to appear confident to your client.
