There are literally hundreds of IVR vendors competing in the telecommunication and call-center arena, so begin by thoroughly researching companies and comparing fees in trade publications and on Web sites such as www.business.com. Many vendors offer free quotes from their Web sites. Look for a company of good standing that demonstrates an interest and talent in developing IVR systems that meet specific customers’ needs. Find out how long the enterprise has been in business and ask for references from its major clients.

IVR vendors can be categorized into three types:

1. IVR manufacturers—these are the telecommunications companies that develop IVR hardware and the software that runs on it.

2. IVR resellers—these businesses sell IVR equipment and software developed by other manufacturers and software vendors. Resellers focus on providing customized solutions and technical support that may not be available from the manufacturers.

3. Specialized software vendors—these companies focus on developing specialized IVR software for businesses.

Vendors will typically offer IVR as a technology in two different ways: 1) local, onsite equipment installation and setup or 2) through an outsourced solution provider.
