How can you prevent this from happening?

There are three major ways that you can prevent the loss of data in such a way that it presents itself as an emergency. The first solution is designed for those that have a small amount of information that needs to be saved, such as an independent personal computer or a small business owner. Most of your files should be able to fit upon a media drive that can be removed, such as a DVD-R (re-writable DVD) or a flash drive. These two items can be purchased for a small amount of money and loaded daily with your vital information so that any power outage or computer hacking during off hours will not affect you too much.

The second solution is to make sure that your data recovery software that is already on your computer is refreshed at least daily. This does not take very long for your computer to do, especially when you can set it to work while you are sleeping or away from the job. This can be done through your computers system diagnostics; refer to your computer’s manual on how to do it on each individual computer.

The third solution is to hook into a larger network or server. This will work especially for medium to large companies, and educational systems. This allows your employees to save their documents and settings onto the server instead of each individual machine. Most companies may have common surge protectors and firewalls guarding each individual computer, but have major power back-ups and larger amounts of Internet security guarding the server. This provides a much safer environment for your documents. This only works, though, if you inform your co-workers that they should save their documents on the server and not on their local drive.
