Recent advances in communication technology have presented a challenge to traditional business long distance. Here are some of the challengers to the communication throne of business long distance:
- Business cell phones: Many companies provide employees with cell phones that are equipped with unlimited nationwide calling. While business long distance cannot compete with the convenience of cell phones, cell phone prices are usually the highest during peak business hours and thus cost significantly more than land lines.
- Email: Email communication is ideal for short, crisp information. Phone calls tend to turn into conversations, but emails can stick to the point. Phone calls, however, generally offer a better sense of connection and communication of tone because you are fully explaining your thoughts and ideas in a conversation.
- Mail/fax: Like email, mail and fax are perfect for sending information, but they lack the thorough explanation that you can provide over a phone call. Long distance calls are more personal (not to mention quicker) than simply putting something in the mail.
Why should a company have long distance in the first place? In the fast-moving business world, nearly every company will need to talk with companies outside its local vicinity. Whether you are calling suppliers, corporate headquarters, rival companies, customers, or government agencies, you will need to communicate with people outside your area. Communicating over the phone provides a human touch, and it increases your chances of getting quick answers to your questions. People can ignore email or faxes or lose their cell phones, but it is hard to ignore the long distance calls at your office.
