Industrial scales come in all shapes and sizes. They can be purchased for weighing products from two pounds to greater than 20,000 pounds. The weight measurements can be displayed in European units (kilogram, gram and microgram) or the United States’ standard unit (pound and ounce). Different types of steel can be used in the scales, including galvanized steel and stainless steel. In selecting a scale, the type of environment must be considered, whether it is a wet environment, dry environment or dusty environment. Whether or not hazardous materials are present is another important factor. The platforms on the scales come in a vast array of dimensions.
Besides weighing items, industrial scales are also used to count items, fill containers, batch products, and so forth.
The smallest industrial scales are used in laboratory settings and some of the largest industrial scales are used to weigh railroad cars and tractor trailer trucks. Floor scales have larger platforms for weighing items in the 5,000 lb to 20,000 lb range. Similar to floor scales are pallet scales which usually have two beams upon which the pallet or product is placed to be weighed. These generally have around a 5,000 lb capacity. Mobile scales have some sort of wheeled mechanism that makes them easy to transport from one location to another. Package scales are similar to the ones found in mailing centers. They are designed for small parcels.
