Hoists Overview

Hoists are the lifting component in cranes and other types of industrial equipment. When used with a crane, there are two main types of hoists. The first type is a chain hoist. It lifts heavy objects as the chain is pulled through sprockets and then collected in a container. The chain hoist is run by an electric motor. Chain hoists tend to be easier to maintain and cheaper to purchase. The other kind of hoist that is used in operating cranes is wire rope hoists. When the wire rope hoist lifts objects, the wire rope is wrapped around a large drum with groves in it. Like the chain hoist, the wire rope hoist is operated by an electric motor. The advantage of wire rope hoists is that they can lift a load faster than chain hoists. Chain hoists and wire rope hoists can both life heavy duty and moderate duty loads. However, chain hoists are more commonly used with loads less than 7.5 tons and wire rope hoists are more commonly used with loads greater than 10 tons.

Hoists are not only very large; they can be much smaller for other industrial uses such as for car repairs and tool shops. A simple hoist weighing only five pounds can have the capacity to lift objects several hundred pounds. Different types of these hoists include lever hoists, hand- chain hoists, electric hoists, and air hoists. Lever and hand-chain hoists can cost a hundred to several hundred dollars while electric and air hoists can cost over a thousand dollars (US).
