Transformers are used for various things. They are typically two coils wound close together so when one coil is energized, current is induced in the other coil. The most common uses for transformers include power, audio, and RF transformers.
• Power transformers: Power transformers are used to convert one type of voltage to another type. You may find a power transformer with a center tap on the secondary side. This allows lower voltages on that line to go through a certain circuit connected to that line.
• Audio transformers: Some times transformers are used in audio circuits to reduce or amply audio signals before transferring the sound to the speaker. They are also used in audio circuits to filter out unwanted voltages so there would be no or minimal signal loss.
• RF transformers: RF transformers are usually used as filters to ensure the signal received from the antenna reaches the tuning circuits at full strength with no stray signals mixed in.
