Coils and Their Use

Coils are basically turns of wire that are used to produce inductance in circuits. In some situations, a coil has a large number of turns that are made up of insulated wire, which are wound close together with iron ore going through the center. The electrical size of a coil is called inductance and is measured in henries. Coils offer opposition to alternating current. This is called reactance and is expressed in ohms. The higher the frequency induced in a circuit, the higher the reactance.

Another type of coil is an induction coil. This is a coil that takes low-voltage direct current and converts it to high-voltage alternating current. The main use of this type of coil is found in automobile ignition systems and certain factory machines.
