The city of Indianapolis is home to one of the world’s most famous sporting events, The Indianapolis 500. The Indy 500 is an automobile race held every Memorial Day Weekend at the world-renowned Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one of the most spectacular sites in the fine city. The race is known as “the most televised annual event in the world.” The Motor Speedway (also known as “The Brickyard”) is a 2 ½ mile oval racetrack. It is also home to NASCAR’s longest annual race, The Allstate 400 at The Brickyard, more commonly known by its former name, The Brickyard 400.

Indianapolis is home to two major league sports teams, the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association, and the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League. Both teams have enjoyed recent success, although neither has won a championship in its respective league. The Pacers’ home is Conseco Fieldhouse, a retro-styled sports stadium located downtown. The Colts’ home is the RCA Dome, one of the few remaining fields in the NFL with artificial turf. The Colts are in the process of building a new stadium to replace the RCA Dome. Both the new stadium (to date unnamed) and the RCA Dome are located downtown.

Other sports teams include the Indiana Fever (Women’s National Basketball Association), the Indianapolis Indians (International League; Baseball), FC Indiana (Women’s Premier Soccer League), and the Indiana Ice (United States Hockey League).

Indianapolis is also the “amateur” sports capital of the world, hosting such events as the PanAmerican Games and the Olympic trials on a regular basis.
