26 years after Jolliet and Marquette arrived in Illinois, the town of Cahokia was founded in 1699 which still remains today. Priests from the Seminary of Foreign Missions in Quebec built the first log church.
Cahokia was not recognised as part of the United States until 5th July 1778 when 30 Virginia Rangers led by Captain Joseph Bowman took Cahokia from the French and after this date, the Cahokia heads of state swore allegiance to the United States congress.
The city still stands today and whilst many of the original features are no longer evident, it does not change the history that visiting Cahokia has to offer tourists.
