Iceland is divided into 98 municipalities that each handle local schools, zoning, etc.; 23 counties with 26 magistrates that run local political offices, tax collections, etc.; and 8 regions that help organize country statistics. In addition to these divisions within the country, Iceland is divided into constituencies which used to be the same as the regions but are now only made up of 6 areas; these constituencies are designed for voting and other local issues.
The major areas in Iceland to be discussed here are the Greater Reykjavík Area, Southern Iceland (which includes Southwestern and Southeastern), Northern Iceland (which includes Northern and Northeastern), Eastern Iceland, and Western Iceland (which includes Western Iceland and the West Fjords).
