In 1845, the modern parliament was designed as a help for the Danish king and was considered to be a renewal of the original 930 AD assembly that had been created for the commonwealth. The Alþingi now has 63 members who are elected by the people to serve for four years.

There is a president of the country; however his position is somewhat ceremonial. He is the diplomat and figurehead who also serves a four-year term. The prime minister handles the executive government with the help of the cabinet. Each member of the cabinet is “appointed” by the president; however, the decisions have generally been previously made by each of the political parties with the support of the Alþingi.
