The following are safety tips and considerations that you should follow when working with insulation:
• If applying the insulation yourself, wear clothing that will protect your skin from irritation should you come in contact with the insulation.
o Long sleeved shirts
o Gloves
o Hat
o Safety glasses
o Disposable dust respirator
• Avoid coming into contact with insulation dust since the flame retardant chemicals can be absorbed through the skin.
• Do not use insulation around bare stovepipes, electrical fixtures, or heat producing equipment. Safety codes prohibit insulation within three inches of recessed lighting enclosures, as this is a fire hazard.
• Do not place insulation over attic vents.
• If you are adding new insulation over old, use a product that has no vapor barrier or slash the barrier at frequent intervals allowing moisture to escape.
• Check for good ventilation when installing insulation to aid in removing water vapors.
• Do not cover eave vents as they provide ventilation to your attic.
• Seal off ducts where insulation could leak into living spaces.
