The home user of air conditioners has two options: a unit air conditioner, or a central air conditioning system.

¤ Unit Air Conditioner ¤

The unit air conditioner, also called the window air conditioner, fits in a window. They cost from $100 to $800.

Pros:

They cost significantly less than central air. Usually, the installation is simple enough that you can do it yourself, making the cost even lower. They are a good addition if you would rather not pay to have central air extended into an added room or two. If you have a number of fans, you can help spread the cold air.

Any heat lovers in the family will be grateful that the entire house is not freezing for them. Also, some units can be removed from the window when the weather turns cold.

Cons:

The unit will primarily cool the room it is placed in. If you are hot-blooded, you will probably find yourself too warm. It is not of much use if your house is large.

¤ Central Air Conditioning System ¤

This type of air conditioning is wired into your heater or a comparable air-manipulating system in your house, borrowing the ductwork. It costs a minimum of $1000, plus professional installation fees. Prices in the range of $2000 to $6000 are much more common, after you include installation.

They are said to last about eighteen years.

Pros:

Central air chills the entire house through preexisting ductwork. You do not need outside fans. It also tends to be more efficient.

Cons:

The up-front cost is much higher than with the unit air conditioner. Your ductwork (and therefore, probably, your heater) will not be able to be used during installation.

Heat lovers are apt to be miserable if a family member loves temperatures that they consider cold.
