Staffing services offer valuable advantages to both the employee and to the company, but there are certain drawbacks to using a staffing service that both the employee and the company should recognize.

From the employee’s point of view, temporary jobs are inherently unpredictable. While this flexibility can be a benefit, it can also be worrisome to not know what job you will have and how much you will be making six weeks or six months from now. In addition, temporary jobs often do not come with benefits such as health insurance, so employees will have to pay for these benefits out of their own pockets.

A temporary job often ties you to a particular position with no opportunity for advancement, as companies hire temporary employees strictly for specific jobs. If you are looking for a permanent job, having a temporary job also limits the amount of time and energy you have to search for that job.

The unpredictability of using a staffing service also impacts the company. In hiring a temporary employee, a company takes the risk that the employee might not work well with the rest of the team. By hiring someone based solely on the recommendation of a staffing service, you are going on a blind date—you don’t have the chance to scout out the employee before you offer them the job.

Even with these drawbacks, the positives usually outweigh the negatives, and the vast majority of businesses do use staffing services in some form or fashion. Whether you are an employee or a company, staffing services allow you both flexibility and dependability. You are able to test the waters without making a long-term commitment.
