What areas of testing are common?

Quite often, employers chose to test candidates in the areas of skills and aptitude, and drug tests. Skills tests can be as simple as a typing test, or can be centered on a specific skill set needed to complete a job. Many employee assessment companies offer testing in a variety of different fields, by job type and skills needed. And often these companies offer free demonstrations and sample tests, and/or you can meet with an assessment company representative to get help determining the right tests for your company.

Depending on the job in question, companies may also choose to test applicants in the following areas:

  • work ethic
  • reliability
  • honesty
  • psychological tests
  • personality tests
  • medical tests
  • cognitive ability
  • behavioral characteristics
  • web and software skills
  • industrial skills.

However, it’s important to realize that not all tests are legal for all positions. State and Federal laws impose restrictions on testing, so it’s best to consult an employment lawyer for advice before implementing any testing program. And know that you must not discriminate against candidates who are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means tests must measure people’s skills, without unfairly screening them out because of their disabilities.
