» What should I look for in an Outplacement provider?
There are a number of outplacement providers available, so you’ll want to research several before choosing one for your company. As you visit their web sites and talk with their analysts, keep the following factors in mind:
- Reputation: Ask the outplacement provider for references. Have they worked with businesses of your size before, and were any of those businesses in your particular field? Once hired, the provider will operate as a continuing representative of your company to terminated employees, so it’s important that you trust them to uphold rather than diminish your reputation.
- Services offered: Does the provider offer a wide spectrum of services, from group seminars to individual interviews and resume preparation? You’re hiring an outplacement provider, at least in part, because you believe your former employees will receive help they otherwise wouldn’t receive, so make sure the provider actually offers such help.
- Fee package: How much will you pay for the services of the outplacement provider, and how specific is the provider’s fee arrangement? The length of the outplacement process will vary from employee to employee, so make sure that your provider is willing to provide you with details about how and when you’ll be charged.
- Length of service: Again, outplacement support is sometimes a long-term process. You’ll therefore want to inquire about the parameters within which your provider will continue to offer help to your former employees. Based upon the type of employee involved, the provider should be able to provide you with specifics about the time limits of their support.
