The period after termination is a difficult time for any employee, regardless of the reason for termination. Whatever the cause of termination, if the employee believes that they were fired unfairly you may find yourself in a lengthy dispute after the termination, particularly if the nature of the firing leads the employee to the conclusion that you don’t – and never did – appreciate them or their work. As a result the establishment of an outplacement program can potentially mitigate such disputes. The existence of an effective outplacement program should result in faster re-employment for your former employees, which means they’ll probably focus their energy on the new job rather than seek redress against you. Additionally, a sound outplacement program demonstrates to the terminated employee that you do, in fact, appreciate them, and that you’re doing everything in your power to enhance their chances of future success. Additional benefits may include:

  • Peace of Mind: There are, doubtless, certain situations in which an employer is happy to terminate a particular employee, and isn’t terribly concerned about that employee’s future prospects. In many cases, however, terminations may simply be unavoidable despite your wishes to the contrary. An outplacement program can thus comfort both the former employee and you, for you know that you’ve done the best you can to provide for the terminated employee.
  • Happier Employees: Outplacement may also aid those employees who remain in the organization. Understandably, the termination of co-workers can build concern among remaining employees, and those concerns mount if former employees tell your current employees that you won’t make any effort to aid them should they also lose their jobs. In contrast, if your remaining employees learn that their former co-workers received job-finding help from you, those current employees can proceed with the knowledge that your business, whatever the future may hold, will look after their best interests.
