First, ask for recommendations of good HR outsourcing companies from colleagues. You want to hire a company you’re comfortable sharing intimate business details with, as they’ll have access to your payroll, financial numbers, and other company details that aren’t generally public knowledge.

Hiring a company to handle such detailed, personal, and liability-prone functions is a big task. You want to fully research your options, check backgrounds, and pick the company that will work most closely with yours to provide the services you need. Some things to check into:

  • Expertise. How well and where were the company’s employees trained? What are their backgrounds? What kind of reputation does the company have for providing high-quality work in a timely, effective manner?
  • Responsiveness. How easy is the company to contact with questions? Are representatives available when you need them, do they answer your questions thoroughly, and do you have more than one way to get a hold of a representative in a pinch? For example, just an e-mail address won’t do. You need a customer-service line, too, because some things just work better when discussed over the phone.
  • History. How long has the company been in business? What is the company’s average longevity with other companies? In other words, do companies hire the outsource firm for the long haul, or try them out and flee after a short time?
  • Friendliness. Sure, it’s not the most important feature, but you want to work with a company you’re comfortable with. Especially when it comes to such important things as Human Resources. It’s not good for business to hire a human resources firm that neglects the human side of the business.
