As with the hiring of any consultant, one of your initial and principal concerns should be compatibility between the consultant and your company. A human capital management consultant will work closely with you (or at least your human resources department) in an attempt to tailor a strategy that fits your needs, so it’s important that you’re comfortable with the consultant and with the fact that he or she will possess inside knowledge of your business. Also, as with any consultant hiring, do some research on the educational background and success rate of your potential consultant. You’re hiring the consultant because you need help, so make certain that they possess the necessary education and experience to provide you with meaningful advice. Also, ask for references from businesses similar to yours, and check on the satisfaction level of those businesses.

In addition to the standard items listed above, pay attention to the creativity and inventiveness of the consultant as he or she presents you with scenarios that might work for your company. Given the importance of compensation and benefits packages as attractors of talented recruits, you’ll want your consultant to provide you with an employee compensation/benefits package which will attract and keep talented employees without unnecessary expense on your part. Finally, your consultant should be willing to conduct a study that examines employee retention in your company and, in turn, provides your business with a detailed plan for the retention of talented employees.
