1. Location
The city of Houston is spread across more than 600 square miles (1,600 square kilometres) and is a county seat of Harris County which is the third most populated part of the country, the center of Houston is located within the Houston – Sugar Land – Baytown metropolitan area.
2. Population
Harris County is the county seat of Houston and the 2000 U.S Census reported that the population with the area was 3.4 million but in 2005 an estimate of 3.7 million was placed on the county. Living in Houston is slightly lower than in Harris County but the total is more than 2 million people and within the metropolitan area amongst ten different counties, there is an overall population of 5.3 million people which makes it the seventh largest metropolitan area.
3. Climate
The climate within Houston is classed as humid subtropical. In the summer you can expect daily temperatures of around 95 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit (35 to 39 degrees c) – the hottest months are generally July and August and winds from the south and southeast tend to bring great humidity from the deserts of Mexico and moisture from the Gulf.
The coldest months of year tend to be December and January can still be reasonably mild between 7 and 16 degrees c (45 – 55 Fahrenheit) but throughout January you will normally find this colder than any other month because of the northerly winds which tend to bring winter rains.
