The phrase “horse tack” is used to refer to all of the equipment that is part of owning and caring for a horse. Tack includes:

• bridle
• bit
• saddle
• girths
• cinches
• saddle pads
• lead ropes
• halters
• whips
• stirrups
• horse boots
• reins
• harnesses
• martingales
• breastplates

As you can see from this brief list of examples of what riding equipment is included in the term “tack,” there is a lot of gear needed when working with horses. All of this equipment can be found and purchased in a tack shop; however, your first trip into one of these shops can be very overwhelming because of the amount of tack available, the different styles on show, and the prices. Make sure to find out before you go to the shop what sorts of things you are going to need. This will help to keep the process from being too much for you and to help you know where to best spend your money.

It is also crucial that you take good care of your tack. Because of the expensive nature of the equipment as well as its impact upon the horse, make sure that it is always in good shape and that you use it properly.
