Riding Equipment Overview

While you may watch the “old wild west” shows and see a cowboy mounting a wild horse and riding off into the sunset without any equipment aside from maybe their spurs, this is far from an accurate picture of what most riding looks like. For many reasons, including the protection of the rider and the horse, there is a variety of tack (or horse equipment) used when taking care of and riding horses.

A few of the pieces of gear that are needed for the horse are horse blankets (which keep the animal warm when it’s cold), bridles (which allow the rider to communicate with the horse), and other tack (which includes everything you use with horses from the saddle to the stirrup leathers). There is also apparatus that is used primarily for the rider’s benefit, like equestrian helmets and riding boots. By properly using riding equipment, the horse and the rider can both stay safe, and the rider will be able to appropriately communicate his or her desires to the horse without hurting the animal.
