Its job is to protect the head (and thus, the brain) in situations of falls or other accidents. Although some riders don’t want to wear a helmet because it holds in heat or messes up their hair, or because they naively think that the chances of them getting hurt aren’t very high, the padding of a helmet can make the difference between a simple “fall off and get back on the horse” situation and a trip to the hospital or something much worse. The helmet that you wear should fit snugly but still have ample ventilation.
There are a variety of styles of helmets available, from helmets that look like cowboy hats to fancy competition fashions. Derby caps also are available and give a traditional “English rider” look. However, whatever style you choose for your helmet, the important thing is that it be a certified helmet – a flexible hat is not going to protect your head. Wear a helmet that will keep you safe!
