Safety for the Horse Itself

Finally, an important part of horse safety and protecting yourself is protecting the horse. With simple precautions and careful observation of what’s going on around you and your horse, you can keep him safe and happy. Here are a few things to watch out for:

• Buildings. Keep an eye on the size of door, the spacing of bars, any hardware on which the horse might get hurt, any materials lying around the barn or shed, etc.
• Pastures. Check the fencing, the draining in the area, etc.
• Wiring. Beware of electrical wiring and anything else that could pose a hazard for the animal.
• Halter. Do not leave your horse in the pasture with a nylon halter, which could cause him to get caught and trapped. It’s better to remove the halter all together; if this is not possible, use a leather halter.
• Trailer. When securing the horse in the trailer, use a safety knot and a safety halter, as well as safety ties on the outside.
• Hay bags. Keep empty hay bags away from the horse.
• Knife. Keep a pocket knife available for cutting lines in an emergency.
• Wire cutters. Take wire cutters with you on all trail rides in case of an emergency.
