In order to properly care for a horse and to maintain your own safety, it is crucial that caution be taken whenever you are near the horse. One such place in which you must be careful is the barn. Here are a few things to consider; proper attention to these details will help keep you from harm:
• Clothing. Make sure that it is appropriate and keeps you safe. Wear boots rather than flip flops.
• Equipment. All barn equipment, including rakes, pitchforks, etc., should be stored properly so that no one will trip over them.
• Cleaning. Care should be taken to make sure not only that everything has been swept up and cleaned, but also that dangerous items such as nails have been picked up.
• Hooves. Watch out for the horse’s hooves; whether you or something else startled or excited the him, make sure that you do not walk into flying hooves.
• Walking. Don’t walk behind the horse if possible; if you must, walk very close to him and touch him while moving. This will keep from startling him.
• Stalls. Keep the animals separate, and give them their needed personal spaces. Horses that do not like each other or even friendly animals in confined spaces can pose a great threat to one another and you.
