A house is like the human body; it needs a skeletal system to support it and hold it upright. A house's frame gives it support, shape and a place to attach the inner and outer coverings.
The frame of a house can be made of several different materials including steel, wood beams, floor joists, wall studs and roof rafters. These parts are used together to build a solid frame that follows building codes based on engineering principles.
To build a solid frame, the builder must know the critical parts of the structure so they do not compromise the frame's strength when remodeling or doing other work that involves cutting into the frame. If the person working on the house would unknowingly take out part (or all) of a load-bearing wall without reinforcing the frame, the floors or roof may sag, windows and doors might stick, or the house might even collapse.
