Picking the right location has a lot to do with your lifestyle and preferences. How close to you want to be to "civilization"? Do you want to be five minutes from the mall or 50? Do you want to be a safe, ten miles to the hospital, or do you want to live far away from the sirens? Do you want to be on a beach? Do you want to be by a lake? Do you want to be in the mountains? Do you want to be out in the country? It's your choice.
You'll also want to consider what you'll use the land for besides building. If you like do activities such as four-wheeling or want to have a large pool, you obviously don't want to live in the middle of town.
Also consider the proximity to schools, churches or anywhere else you might be going on a regular basis.
